Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Wilder, Kentucky. For those in need of alcohol or drug tests involving hair samples, we excel in this area with testing centers across all U.S. cities. The standard requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, typically from the scalp, although body hair can be used. These evaluations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include tailor-made options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method for substance screening. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts often mandate this method over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and probationers. Their main advantage is a longer drug detection period, usually up to 90 days, with direct observation during collection, making tampering extremely difficult. However, they are less effective for detecting drug use within a 5-day window compared to urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains evidence of long-term substance use by embedding biomarkers within its continually growing fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up a detection timeline of roughly 3 months for substances, including alcohol. It's straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing about 200 strands of hair (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is conducted in four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory processing phase, where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s framework. It ensures the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any missing data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening performs an initial, swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage for most samples, any positive screening requires confirmation to be legally valid in court. All samples presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at lower concentrations than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug screening the most intricate methodological process.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory course from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, contrary to urine tests that have a more limited detection span.
  • Reduced likelihood of deception: Cheating a hair drug test is particularly difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical data: It offers an overview of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot determine recent consumption: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variations in hair color, along with individual hair growth differences, may influence the concentration levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand instead of the hair follicle situated beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
