Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Wilmore, Kentucky. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair analysis and maintain testing locations in every city across the Nation to execute such tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be tested. Hair analysis is capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly supplanted traditional urine analysis. A growing number of employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer these tests. They are primarily utilized by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judiciary bodies, and probation subjects. The main advantage of hair tests is their longer drug detection period, typically up to 90 days, coupled with an observed gathering process that makes test evasion nearly impossible. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances like alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When cut near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for a period stretching up to roughly three months. The collection process for hair is straightforward, its tampering is relatively challenging, and it is convenient for delivery.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate specimen weighing. In instances where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The comprehensive laboratory process for a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample enters a lab's system. This step ensures correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and attends to any further data entry if not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for illicit substances. While it's a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive screening must be substantiated for legal matters. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

In the case of a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Drugs are then extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), adding to the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as needed. The complete laboratory operations from Accessioning to Confirmation are evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adhere to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a narrower detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides historical data: It outlines a timeline of drug use over an extended period rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable within hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth patterns may influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" often refers to this analysis, but the test examines the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wilmore, KY, hair follicle testing stands out against urine testing due to its superior detection range. With a much longer window of detection, hair testing captures a more comprehensive substance use history. This method's reliability and accuracy surpass the conventional urine test, making it a preferred choice for employers seeking thorough drug use evidence.

Extended Detection Window

Offering an extended window of detection, hair follicle testing in Wilmore, KY can identify drug use up to 90 days prior. This capability provides employers with an extensive view of an individual's substance history. Compared to other methods, hair testing offers more thorough insights, aiding employers in making informed decisions regarding potential hires.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Wilmore, KY greatly minimize the risk of tampering. The genetic makeup of a hair sample makes adulteration extremely difficult. This robust resistance to manipulation assures accuracy and reliability, providing employers and legal persons with indisputable test results, enhancing their trust in the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
