Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing facilities in Woodburn, Kentucky. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers are available nationwide, inclusive of all cities, to conduct these tests effectively. Hair measuring between 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is generally required. Tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been utilized in drug screening processes. They're now the preferred method for employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal courts, and for individuals under probation. Their primary advantage is the extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, with collections observed, making tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting drug use within the immediate past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a robust tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substances by capturing biomarkers in its fibers as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period for substances that spans up to roughly three months. Hair is easy to collect, less prone to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch length consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimum sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. In the context of head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This comprises confirming the sample’s sealing and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and doing any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not handle.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for commonly abused drugs. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to discount drug use in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation to be deemed admissible in legal settings. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Upon a sample showing presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, substances are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive are cleaned as needed before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use extending to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter detection period.
  • Increased accuracy: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Tracks historical usage: It can demonstrate a usage pattern over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes around five to seven days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are generally priced higher than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is of the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Woodburn, KY, hair follicle testing significantly outperforms traditional urine tests in several ways. One major advantage is its long detection period, enabling the identification of drug use for up to 90 days, far beyond the urine test's capability. This extended window gives employers and other stakeholders a more comprehensive view of an individual's drug use history.

Additionally, hair testing provides greater accuracy and reliability compared to urine tests. With a less intrusive sample collection process, it reduces the likelihood of tampering and cheating. In an era where trust and precision in drug testing are key, hair follicle tests emerge as a superior option in Woodburn, KY.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing gives a vast advantage in detecting drug use, as it covers an extended window of up to 90 days. For employers in Woodburn, KY, this means accessing a broader timeline of an individual’s drug use, providing a thorough understanding of their substance history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
