Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Anacoco, Louisiana. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities located in cities across the Nation ready to conduct these tests. Possessing 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is generally required. These analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other specialized hair testing solutions.

The approach to drug testing has shifted in recent times, increasingly favoring the hair follicle method. More often, employers, judiciary bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now demand hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle analyses are preferred by those upholding zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and probation officers. A key advantage is their extended detection timeline for substance use, up to 90 days, collected under observation and hard to tamper. Nonetheless, for drug usage detection within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, hair offers an approximately 3-month window of detection for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipment is convenient.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, an optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning describes the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This phase ensures the sample is correctly sealed and transmitted, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, any positive result needs confirmation to hold legal standing. Samples that yield a presumptive positive result in Screening must undergo secondary verification.

For any samples with a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial batch is extracted for Examination. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lower concentration than through other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair analysis the most intricate method.

Confirmation of any positive screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleaning before confirmation as needed. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resilience to deception: It's notably challenging to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Delivers historical data: It illustrates a drug use trend over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Aspects such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often misused, as the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
