Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Antrim, Louisiana. If a hair drug or alcohol examination is needed, turn to Accredited Drug Testing as we are experts in hair tests, with centers in every city nationwide to carry out these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is necessary. Hair analyses can be tailored to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or personal testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests are more common in drug testing. Various employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for this over standard urine assessments. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial bodies, and probationers. A key advantage is the lengthy detection span of up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making it nearly foolproof. Yet, for recent 5-day checks, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly seen as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encasing biomarkers within the strands' fibers, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake. Proximity to the scalp allows hair to reveal a near 3-month detection range for alcohol and drugs. It’s easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. A jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent from body hair may be used. The term head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four critical phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial integration into a lab’s system. This entails confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any ancillary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it is an economical method to exclude drug consumption in most samples, positive results in Screening require further verification for court validity. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation step.

For results presumed positive at Screening, additional hair from the original sample is extracted for further processing. Drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples deemed presumptive positives are washed prior to any necessary confirmation. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection scope.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly difficult to compromise a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers chronological insights: It provides a depiction of drug use over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier than alternate testing methods.
  • Result variability: Individual differences such as hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand itself, not the underlying scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
