Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. Whether it’s for drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. Our nationwide testing centers are equipped to perform hair tests, requiring typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair analysis can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, the approach to drug testing increasingly involves the use of hair follicle tests. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer them over standard urine tests. These hair tests are ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation requirements. Their main advantage is the extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, with observation during collection making them nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for analysis. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair forms (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in laboratory processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial handling of a sample in a lab's system. It involves confirming that the sample was securely sealed and adequately shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other necessary data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening entails an initial brief assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an affordable method for ruling out drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be verified to be acceptable in legal contexts. Samples presuming positivity in Screening need further confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analyses more complex than other techniques.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is thoroughly reviewed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can point out drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a much shorter detection time frame.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers a historical view: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over a span of time, rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the method itself assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Belle Chasse, LA, hair follicle tests offer numerous benefits over urine tests. They ensure superior detection accuracy, being highly reliable. Unlike urine tests, hair tests cover a greater period of substance use, giving a complete profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
