Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Bienville, Louisiana. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. You need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body, and the analysis can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common part of drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals frequently choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests align with zero-tolerance policies and probation requirements due to their extended detection span of up to 90 days and nearly uncheatable supervised collection process. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 90-day timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels beyond ten, 150mg of the sample is ideal. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is missing, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. By “head hair,” we solely refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The process entails four key steps in laboratory analysis for drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially processed within a lab's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary inspection for substance misuse. Though Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen needs validation to be legally acceptable. Any preliminary positive samples in Screening necessitate a confirming analysis.

If a sample suggests positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as essential. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historic insight: It can display a pattern of substance usage over time, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It typically takes between 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
