Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Boyce, Louisiana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we're proficient in hair analysis with centers across all cities nationwide ready to assist. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Tests can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair screenings.

Lately, more drug tests utilize hair follicle examinations. Various employers, legal entities, and substance professionals prefer this over regular urine tests. Hair tests are vital for zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probationers. The smoking gun of a hair test lies in its longer detection span, usually up to 90 days, with observed collections hard to tamper. Yet, recent drug use, within 5 days, is best detected via urine tests.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a timeline for alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When retrieved close to the scalp, it can allow a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels greater than 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" pertains to scalp hair exclusively, while "Body hair" means all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the drug test laboratory processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step in processing a sample within the lab's system. This encompasses verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any outstanding data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method to generally negate drug usage in most samples; however, a positive finding in Screening requires confirmation for it to be permissible in legal settings. Samples that show presumptive positive results in Screening need further confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During this stage, drugs are separated from hair at a much finer concentration than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a highly complex methodology.

Positive screening confirmations are executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positives undergo washing, if necessary, before confirmation. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conformity to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine testing offers a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Faking a hair drug test is highly challenging, which enhances the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It can indicate a timeline of drug use over a duration, not just detect recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days post-drug use for it to be ascertainable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
