Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Brownsfield, Louisiana. For those in need of drug or alcohol testing, our specialty in hair analysis is supported by Nationwide testing centers in all major cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, or body hair may be used for analysis. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine methods. This approach suits organizations with strict no-drug policies, probation scenarios, and legal settings. With a detection period up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and near-impossibility of cheating, hair testing proves advantageous, while urine tests remain best for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly pencil-sized) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair may be collected. References to head hair pertain specifically to scalp hair, while body hair covers all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result encompasses Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s workflow. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary review for substances of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method for indicating drug use in most samples; however, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

For samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is processed for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The overall lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days in the past, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Reduced possibility of deception: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, resulting in more reliable findings.
  • Shows usage histories: They demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Brownsfield, LA, hair follicle tests outshine urine tests in many ways. A hair test provides a longer detection window and is more difficult to tamper with, making it a preferred choice for maintaining stringent drug-free environments. Compared to urine tests, hair analysis offers superior accuracy and reliability, significantly lowering the risk of false negatives or positives and instilling greater trust in test outcomes.

With its extensive detection capabilities, a hair follicle test can trace drug use patterns effectively, unlike traditional urine tests which have limited detection periods. This thoroughness is crucial for employers seeking comprehensive screening methods.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout benefits of hair follicle testing in Brownsfield, LA, is its extended detection window. Unlike traditional methods, hair testing can uncover drug use spanning up to 90 days, offering employers a panoramic view of applicant or employee drug habits over time. This ability ensures employers can make informed decisions based on thorough substance use history.

This longer detection capability makes hair tests a vital tool for both screening new hires and monitoring existing employees, ensuring consistency in a drug-free workplace commitment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are inherently more tamper-resistant, particularly useful in settings like Brownsfield, LA. The method drastically reduces the chance of sample adulteration compared to urine tests. This ensures that results are reliable and beyond question, providing testing entities peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
