At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Calvin, Louisiana. Specializing in hair tests for drugs or alcohol, we have testing centers in all nationwide cities equipped for such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are required. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug testing is favored over traditional methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for it instead of urine tests. Organizations with zero-drug tolerance, judicial systems, and those on probation are some of its primary users. Its advantage is a longer detection period (up to 90 days), difficult to falsify, although urine tests are more precise for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a prolonged record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period for substances extending up to roughly 3 months. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, extra screenings, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent body hair amount might be utilized. "Head hair" pertains specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test outcome comprises four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the incorporation of a sample into a lab’s framework. This step involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entries not captured by an electronic custody chain.

Screening is an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug presence in most samples, any positive results require confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive Screening samples demand further confirmation.

Upon presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to perform.

The Confirmation step for any positive screen result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Pre-confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • Challenge to compromise: The high difficulty in compromising a hair drug test enhances the precision of results.
  • Historical usage pattern: It can reveal a usage pattern over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variances: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence the metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the scalp's follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
