Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services within Chambers, Louisiana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we are proficient in hair testing and provide facilities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is generally required. Hair testing is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

In recent years, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has increased in drug testing practices. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers increasingly utilize this method. Hair follicle testing is favored for its extended detection range of up to 90 days and is collected under observation to prevent tampering. Yet, for drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a timeline for alcohol and drug usage by encasing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample weight of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent portion of body hair is an acceptable substitute. In the context of head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Outline

The lab procedure for drug test result processing includes four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial phase whereby a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening involves performing a preliminary swift examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in a majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Any samples testing presumptive positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

In cases where a sample returns a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration compared to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

The validation of any positive Screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before Confirmation when required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Low susceptibility to manipulation: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Supplies a usage timeline: It offers an overview of drug use patterns over time, not simply recent abuse.

Restrictions:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Fluctuations in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strands and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
