Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Charenton, Louisiana. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our specialization in hair testing is unparalleled. We operate testing facilities in all cities across the nation, capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Hair evaluations can discern drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a favored method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and professionals dealing with Substance Abuse are leaning more towards hair tests over traditional urine exams. These tests are invaluable for employers with staunch anti-drug policies, courts, and for individuals under probation. The key advantage is its extensive detection window, stretching up to 90 days, coupled with a supervised collection process, making tampering nearly impossible. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assays have established themselves as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. As hair strands grow, they embed biomarkers within their fibers, offering a long-term record of substance use. When gathered close to the head, hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage within a roughly 90-day period. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A section of hair measuring 1.5 inches and containing approximately 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, considered the perfect amount for both screening and analysis. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair sample is recommended. If head hair isn't available, body hair of equal volume can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (like facial and armpit hair).

Procedure Synopsis

The drug testing process in a lab involves four pivotal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Validation.

Accessioning is the first step, where a sample is introduced into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing information not available through an electronic custody chain.

Screening offers an initial, rapid assessment for potential drug presence. Even though Screening offers a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage for many samples, any positive results must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples showing potential positive results during Screening need further validation.

For samples identified as potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at lower concentrations than other techniques like urine or oral fluid tests, making hair drug testing the most complex to conduct.

Validation of any positive Screening outcomes uses methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before validation, all samples presumed positive undergo washing as necessary. Each step, from Accessioning to Validation, is thoroughly reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug consumption up to three months back, in contrast to the shorter detection spans of urine tests.
  • Low susceptibility to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is particularly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronic usage insights: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result inconsistency: Hair color and individual hair growth rate variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though termed "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
