Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Choudrant, Louisiana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing comes with the convenience of testing centers located in all cities across the nation, ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or other body areas can be utilized. These tests assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Lately, using hair follicle drug tests for drug detection has become more prevalent. Many organizations such as employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts require a hair drug test over the usual urine test. Organizations with strict drug policies, court systems, and probation services rely on hair follicle testing for its extended detection period of drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it almost impossible to alter. However, for detecting drug use within a recent 5-day timeframe, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective mechanism for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair's growth. When collected from the scalp's proximity, hair can reveal up to an approximate 3-month window for alcohol and drug detection. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to send for testing.

A 1.5-inch segment, around 200 hair strands (resembling the diameter of a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equal portion of body hair may be utilized. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug testing in a laboratory encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the start of embedding a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizes any remaining data entry not completed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, positive screens need subsequent confirmation for court validity. Any samples presumed positive during Screening must undergo another confirmation process.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at markedly lower concentrations from hair than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug analysis the most complex testing method.

Any positive outcomes from Screening are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are pre-washed if required before confirmation. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a narrower timeframe.
  • Harder to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus increasing result reliability.
  • Offers past-usage insights: It depicts a history of drug use over time, not solely immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent usage: A duration of 5-7 days is required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis is typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Variances such as hair color and individual growth rates can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
