Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Cottonport, Louisiana. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with numerous centers across cities nationwide equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific analyses.

In recent times, the adoption of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent for drug testing purposes. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, as well as by courts and probation services due to their extended detection periods, lasting up to 90 days, carried out under observation, and are difficult to tamper with. However, to detect drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate method.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers into the growing hair strand fibers. When taken near the scalp, a hair sample can offer nearly a 3-month detection range for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of around 200 strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp area will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal amount of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four central steps in processing a drug test in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample in a lab's system. This entails ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is about conducting an initial check for drugs. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in the majority of samples, positive screens must be validated to be admissible legally. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need further Confirmation.

If a sample is presumptive positive during the Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: It detects drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which provide a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Shows historical patterns: It can illustrate drug use over a longer duration, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It usually takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
