Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Downsville, Louisiana. Need a hair drug or alcohol test? Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, and we operate centers across all cities Nationwide where a hair test can be conducted. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Our hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for various needs.

Over recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are turning to hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are sought by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation. Unlike standard tests, hair follicle testing offers a longer detection window, up to 90 days, collected securely and is very hard to tamper with. Though, for recent drug use, the urine test remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, it offers a detection timeframe of up to around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is recommended. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the specimen. Where scalp hair is not available, equivalent body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, this refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's system. This involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of misuse. While it is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation to be admissible in a legal setting. Any samples that appear positive during Screening need additional confirmation.

If a sample appears positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction preparation. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and concurrently accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to the shorter window for urine tests.
  • High resistance to tampering: Altering the results of a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing its accuracy.
  • Historic usage pattern: It can illustrate drug use trends over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: The test is commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", though it examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
