Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in East Point, Louisiana. When in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this realm with facilities spread across all cities in the U.S. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for testing. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other custom options available.

The rise in hair follicle drug testing has seen its adoption as an alternative to traditional urine tests by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. Entities with zero-tolerance policies utilize these tests due to their extensive drug detection window, spanning 90 days. These tests are observed and resistant to tampering. For very recent drug use, up to 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection window for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is easy, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In laboratory processing of drug test results, the four primary steps are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step includes confirming that the sample arrived sealed and properly shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective and suitable for ruling out drug use in many samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court admissible. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is taken from the original specimen to prepare for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence why hair drug screening poses greater methodological challenges.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. Each laboratory step from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Hard to bypass: The results of hair drug tests are more dependable due to their resistance to cheating.
  • Historical insight: They reveal patterns of drug use over time, beyond simply recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Pricey: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than alternative drug testing forms.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
