Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Eden Isle, Louisiana. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in this type of testing. Our centers are available in every city across the Nation and can conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

In recent years, the prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has increased. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is chosen by employers with zero-tolerance policies, as well as by courts and probation officers. The key advantage is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, coupled with a monitored collection process, making it nearly foolproof. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to collect, tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, the same quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial application of a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses checking that the sample was securely sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any added data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary swift check for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be verified for courtroom use. Any samples with a tentative positive from Screening need additional confirmation.

Should a sample show positive indications during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the main specimen and is readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the toughest to execute.

Confirmation for any preliminary positive screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating a positive are cleansed before Confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: It is challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Supplies historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be perceptible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
