Accredited Drug Testing offers wide-ranging hair follicle analyses in Edgefield, Louisiana. For anyone needing a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing facilities available in cities across the nation. Typically, testing requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other options.

In more recent times, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals often mandate hair drug tests over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle drug assessments serve employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and those on probation. The chief advantage lies in a prolonged detection span, reaching up to 90 days, within a monitored collection scenario, reducing cheating risks. Urine tests, however, remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair analysis for identifying drug and alcohol consumption has gained recognition as an efficient method. Hair preserves a long-term record by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for a period up to approximately 3 months. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

To obtain an optimal sample for screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp should be provided, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. Verifying weight with a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair could be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair covers other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial sample processing into a laboratory’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry if not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug misuse. It offers a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage suspicions for most samples; however, legal admissibility requires a confirmed positive screen. Presumptively positive Screening samples necessitate secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at concentrations much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), affirming hair drug screening as a sophisticated methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS approaches. Prior to confirmation, necessary presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process. A comprehensive review of the whole laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, falls under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited window.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test proves difficult, thus enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical data provision: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over a timeframe rather than recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur greater costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
