In Egan, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test involving hair, our specialization in hair testing is available across cities nationwide, including all essential testing centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas is necessary, allowing for analysis of drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other personalized testing alternatives.

The approach to drug testing has evolved significantly, with hair follicle drug tests gaining prominence over traditional methods. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts are now favoring hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Such tests cater to zero-tolerance drug use policies, legal requirements, and probationary conditions. Hair follicle testing offers a broader detection window, extending up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, minimizing the chance of tampering. However, when assessing drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair essentially offers a historical record of alcohol and other drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected from near the scalp, hair can cover up to a quarter-year timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing about 200 hair strands (approximately the same as a #2 pencil's width) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons and/or for tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the lab comprises four chief steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the first stage of processing a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not covered by an automated chain of custody system.

Screening involves a quick preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is usually a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening needs confirmation to be legally valid. All samples that indicate a positive result in Screening require an additional confirmation test.

When a sample is tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo a washing cycle prior to the confirmation process, as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is significantly tough to falsify results in a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a sequence of drug use across an extended period, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot confirm recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be recognizable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are generally costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
