Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Epps, Louisiana. For those in need of a drug or alcohol examination via hair analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in this method, with facilities available across all cities nationwide to conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, or body hair, may be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or support other bespoke testing needs.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has become a more prevalent method in drug testing. Many businesses, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests to traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judiciary, and those on probation increasingly opt for hair tests. The key benefit of this test is its ability to detect drug usage over a longer span, typically up to 90 days, collected under strict observation, making it difficult to tamper with. For detecting drug use within the last five days, however, urine tests are still deemed most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a developing hair strand, it offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol consumption for up to three months. Hair is easy to take, a challenge to tamper with, and is simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred sample amount for evaluations and confirmations. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or screens exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's best to measure the specimen's weight with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of bodily hair may be utilized. When we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in a laboratory's analysis of drug testing: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing step where a sample is integrated into a lab's framework. This step includes verifying proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional details absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Though efficient in ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome requires validation for legal proceedings. Any samples testing presumptively positive at this stage need secondary confirmation.

If the Screening phase suggests a positive result, additional hair is sourced from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from the hair, where the substance concentration is considerably lower than other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Any positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire process is guided by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualification and accredited under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a 90-day window, compared to urine tests having shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to tamper with, increasing result accuracy.
  • Chronological usage data: This method provides insights into drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Does not identify recent use: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days after drug exposure.
  • Expense: Generally, hair screening is more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
