Serving the Ethel, Louisiana community, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair analysis ensures accurate results. With testing centers across the country, tests can use 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair. Options include drug, alcohol/ETG, and tailored tests.

Hair follicle testing has become increasingly common for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts favor it over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict drug policies, judicial entities, and those on probation utilize this method. The major advantage is a detection period extending up to 90 days—making it tough to evade. However, urine tests remain optimal for recent use under five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been viewed as a vital method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibrous structure of the hair as it grows. If collected near the scalp, hair can reveal usage patterns for alcohol and drugs over a roughly three-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) positioned closest to the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG testing, and/or when assessing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary additional data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out a preliminary quick test for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most cases, any positive outcome requires confirmation to be legally accepted. Any samples that yield a preliminary positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

For a specimen suspected to be positive during Screening, additional hair is withdrawn from the primary sample for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluids), which underlines the complexity of performing hair drug tests.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples that are tentatively positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The end-to-end laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly reviewed under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal usage patterns over time, not simply recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It necessitates around 5-7 days for drugs to become visible in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test analyzes the hair strand instead of the follicle located under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
