Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services across Glynn, Louisiana. Whether in need of a hair drug test or alcohol assessment, we specialize in hair testing, and have facilities across the Nation to conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is generally required. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as other specialized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more popular method in drug testing. Employers, law courts, and substance abuse experts are now increasingly opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are essential for employers with zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, and probation conditions. The primary advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, its observed collection process, and its resistance to tampering. However, for drug use reported within the past 5 days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand, preserving a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately three-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is preferred. It's advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be collected. Reference to head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system, ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick check for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective way to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be admissible in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. During this process, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is highly challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: Hair drug tests can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just current use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is generally more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
