Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Grosse Tete, Louisiana. If you require a hair drug or alcohol exam, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, boasting facilities nationwide capable of administering such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent times, the approach to drug assessment has increasingly favored hair follicle drug exams. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are ideal for organizations with strict drug-free policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The chief benefit includes an extensive detection timeline, often up to 90 days, using a monitored collection process that's difficult to bypass. However, for screening recent drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent method for the identification of drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG additions and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial processing of a sample into the lab's system. This step verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening efficiently rules out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample is flagged presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening finding is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, making results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can indicate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Results variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
