Inniswold, Louisiana benefits from full-spectrum hair follicle drug testing provided by Accredited Drug Testing. Whether you require a hair or alcohol test, Accredited excels in hair testing, with centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. These hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle assessments. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests instead of the usual urine tests. Such tests are embraced by those with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal authorities, and individuals under probation. The main advantage is a significantly extended detection window of up to 90 days, utilizing direct observation, making them nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, for assessing recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair records a long-term history of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers in the strands of the hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch length consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn’t present, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When head hair is mentioned, it refers to only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory system. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to disqualifying drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample appears presumptively positive in the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and made ready for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

For Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is utilized. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Resistant to circumvention: Hair drug tests are challenging to alter, thus providing more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a usage pattern over time, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
