Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Jamestown, Louisiana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our focus is on hair testing, with centers available nationwide for conducting tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, usually taken from the crown or body. These tests offer insights into drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts demand hair drug tests instead of standard urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services utilize these tests. A key advantage is the extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, with an observed collection that's tough to tamper with. Despite this, when testing for drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a strong method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive record of substance use, as biomarkers get encapsulated in the hair strand fibers during growth. When taken from the scalp, it enables detection of alcohol and drugs for up to around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hairs (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the optimum quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, additional substances, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It's beneficial to measure the hair weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, equivalent body hair can be secured. Referencing head hair solely pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory stage where a sample is entered into the laboratory's system. This step involves checking that the sample's seal and shipment are intact, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial examination for drug presence. Though Screening is economical for most samples to dismiss drug use, a positive outcome needs verification to be legally credible. Samples flagged as positives during Screening demand a confirmation step.

In cases where a sample tests positive during the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Preparation. In this step, drugs are drawn from hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, if required. The entire laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair analysis can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair analysis is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Records historical usage: Displays a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair analyses typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the assessment examines the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
