In Jones, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers efficient hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is available through centers nationwide, including every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for these tests, which can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Nowadays, the prevalence of hair follicle testing for drug analysis has increased. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are leaning towards hair testing over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with rigorous no-drug policies, courts, and those overseeing probation. Their main advantage lies in identifying drug use for up to 90 days, with observable collection and near-immunity to tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting very recent drug use within five days, urine tests still provide the most precise results.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month timeline for alcohol and drug presence. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hairs (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG evaluations, additional tests, or more than 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Use a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" specifies only scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result consists of four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates with integrating a sample into a laboratory system. This involves confirming the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing information not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substance abuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use in many samples, a confirmed screen is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples appearing positive during screening require further confirmation.

Presumptive positives from Screening lead to additional hair extraction for the next phase. In Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair screening challenging to execute.

Positive screening confirmations are conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo a wash before confirmation. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drugs for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter timelines.
  • Hard to compromise: Cheating on a hair test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Details usage history: It reveals drug use patterns over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically cost more compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can impact metabolite concentration.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
