In Joyce, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in this area with testing centers in cities across the country ready to administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere on the body can be used. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of the drug testing process recently. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation programs due to a significantly longer detection window, typically up to 90 days. They involve an observed collection, ensuring the process is virtually tamper-proof. However, urine tests are still the most precise for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained popularity as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of substances by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair samples can reveal alcohol and drug use over an approximately 3-month period. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing around 200 hairs (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG tests and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. We advise measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable weight of body hair can be taken. By head hair, we mean solely the scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system, verifying that the sample has been appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial cursory check for substance misuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective means of eliminating drug usage among most samples, a positive screen requires subsequent confirmation to stand in legal proceedings. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening mandate secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is the most complex methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a reduced detection window.
  • Infeasibility of deception: It's significantly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thus ensuring more credible results.
  • Historical data provision: It charts a pattern of substance use over an extended period, rather than just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle testing in Joyce, LA provides unmatched detection accuracy, making it the preferred choice for discerning drug use. The ability to ascertain long-term substance consumption offers a clear edge over traditional methods. This enhanced reliability safeguards employers and organizations against potential compliance risks and drug policy violations.

Hair testing offers accurate results that prove beneficial to employers seeking comprehensive assessments. The superior detection capacity coupled with a non-invasive process further enhances its appeal over conventional urine testing options.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing enables an expansive detection window, reaching up to 90 days back, offering employers in Joyce, LA a valuable insight into an individual's drug usage history over a substantial period. This extended period of detection makes it a powerful tool in assessing prolonged substance use and risk factors.

Employers benefit immensely from the extensive coverage of hair testing, which delivers detailed analyses of employees' or candidates' substance habits. This prolonged window allows informed decision-making, supporting healthier and safer work environments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests minimize the possibility of adulteration, providing Joyce, LA with an authentic and reliable testing solution. This testing method's robust nature ensures the accuracy and inviolability of results, thereby fortifying the trust of employers in their drug screening processes.

Equipped with tamper-evidence technology, hair follicle tests are not only resilient to manipulation but also extremely dependable, helping communities maintain integrity in their substance screening protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
