Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug and alcohol testing in Kingston, Louisiana. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing and provide access to testing centers across the nation, including in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body can be used for testing. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made hair testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common in drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, the judicial system, and probationers. A key advantage of these hair tests is their extended drug detection time frame, usually up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and nearly impossible to deceive. However, for detecting drug use within the previous five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Considering its efficacy, hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate a prolonged account of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected from near the scalp, this method provides a detection timeframe of up to approximately three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimum amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of hair. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. By noting head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of processing a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry if required, excluding what an electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening innately conducts a swift examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in the majority of samples, any positive screen demands confirmation to be admissible in court. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Suppose a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening. In that case, further hair is extracted from the initial sample, preparing it for the Extraction phase, where drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Confirming any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation when required. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny complying with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage over 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating resilience: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal a drug usage pattern over time, rather than just current use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection limitation: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often costlier compared to other methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," this test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Kingston, LA, surpasses traditional urine testing by offering more reliable and accurate detection. Hair testing provides a broader window of detection, capturing drug use up to 90 days prior, something urine tests cannot match. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
