Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Kolin, Louisiana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and operates testing centers across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, objective collection process, and difficulty to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by encapsulating biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair provides approximately a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to gather 150mg of the sample. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick test for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to rule out drug usage in most samples, any positive finding must be corroborated to be legally valid. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening finding is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to subvert: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines urine testing in several ways in Kolin, LA. For starters, its detection accuracy surpasses traditional urine tests, ensuring comprehensive insight into an individual's substance history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
