Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Lake End, Louisiana. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is unmatched, with testing centers in cities Nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Hair tests can investigate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts have shifted to hair drug tests instead of the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of such tests is an extended detection window for drug use, reaching up to 90 days, through an observed collection process that is hard to tamper with. Yet, urine tests remain most reliable for checking drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and substances by retaining biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We advocate using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample. In situations where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial handling within the laboratory system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening provides a reasonable method to exclude drug utilization in most samples, but a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples that show presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

Presumptive positives from the Screening stage prompt the use of more hair from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Confirmatory testing for any positive screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are preliminarily washed as needed before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Cheating complications: Hair drug tests are particularly resistant to tampering, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage insights: It reveals a drug use pattern over time rather than recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: There is a 5-7 day delay before drugs are detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Testing hair samples usually costs more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the assessment examines the hair strand instead of the scalp's follicle

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The case for choosing hair follicle testing over urine tests is strong in Lake End, LA. These tests exhibit not only heightened detection accuracy but also unrivaled reliability. Compared to urine tests, hair testing offers a longer detection window and cannot be manipulated as easily, making it the superior choice for comprehensive drug screening.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
