Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Mamou, Louisiana. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair analysis, with testing sites across cities nationwide ready to administer the test. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is necessary. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Over recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair testing over standard urinalysis. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and those on probation utilize these tests. A major advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days and its resistance to tampering, though for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term information regarding alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strands. When collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, making it somewhat tamper-resistant and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment, consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp, will yield about 100mg of hair, which is optimal for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types of hair, including facial and axillary types.

Procedure Synopsis

The laboratory processes for determining drug test outcomes encompass four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes checking if the sample was properly sealed and sent, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to disregard drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs validation for judicial admissibility. Samples that show presumptive positives require secondary validation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are filtered from hair at much reduced concentrations compared to other methods (for instance, urine or oral fluids), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter duration.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides usage history: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a timespan rather than just immediate use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as “hair follicle tests,” the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Mamou, LA, the benefits are evident. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests might highlight recent drug use, hair tests provide a more comprehensive picture, capturing substance use up to 90 days. This longer detection window ensures a more thorough investigation into a person’s drug history, making hair testing the smarter choice for employers and professionals.

Extended Detection Window

In Mamou, LA, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window that can reveal drug use over as much as three months. This comprehensive look allows employers to gain insights into an individual's long-term substance habits, providing valuable data for making informed decisions. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
