Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Meraux, Louisiana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair tests, with centers available nationwide that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head is required, though body hair may also be used in certain instances. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, ETG/alcohol, or other bespoke options.

Recently, the popularity of hair follicle drug tests has increased in drug screening procedures. Numerous employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests as an alternative to the traditional urine test. Employers, especially those with strict anti-drug policies, as well as courts and probation officers, commonly employ hair follicle tests. The significant advantage is the extended detection period, which can reach up to 90 days, collected in a supervised process, making it nearly cheat-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the preferred option for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and other drugs by ensnaring biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tough to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) next to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be substituted. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory system. This step includes verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid inspection for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient solution to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be admissible in court. Samples that appear positive in Screening require another confirmation phase.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the challenge of conducting hair drug screening.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug exams can capture drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine exams which have shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to deceive: Disguising results in a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It provides insight into a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs need roughly 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the scalp-rooted hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
