Accredited Drug Testing offers full hair follicle drug testing services in Merrydale, Louisiana. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair testing, and we have centers nationwide, including all cities, that can provide this service. Hair of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is typically needed for testing. These tests can detect substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other analyses.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more common. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and probationary services favor hair follicle analysis for its extensive detection period, which spans up to 90 days. It’s done under observation, minimizing tampering, despite urine tests being more precise for recent 5-day drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history of drug and alcohol intake by incorporating biomarkers within the hair strand fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can furnish up to about a 3-month timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A sample of 1.5 inches composed of around 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg, the optimal quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other hair types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The four primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary entry of a sample into the laboratory system, verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing information not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, court admissibility of a positive screen mandates confirmation. Samples with presumptive positives during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternatives (e.g., urine or oral fluid), presenting hair drug testing as the most intricate methodology.

Any positive screening findings undergo verification via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests with shorter detection windows.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insights: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Results variability: Influences like hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outshines Urine Testing in Merrydale, LA
The choice between hair follicle testing and traditional urine testing often favors the former due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests identify substance use over longer periods, providing a more comprehensive view of an individual's history, which urine tests fail to match.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
