Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Montpelier, Louisiana. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available across the nation, including all cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing solutions.

Over recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle drug tests. Many organizations, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probation personnel. A major advantage is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, through an observed collection, which is extremely difficult to falsify. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means of identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within its growing strands. When fetched near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a three-month time frame for detecting drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for initial and confirmatory testing. For tests such as EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core steps in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial sample processing within a laboratory's framework. This process involves validating that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system may not cover.

Screening includes a preliminary, swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening presents the most challenge to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can detect drug employment for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can reveal a user’s drug use pattern over time, not just immediate usage.

Challenges:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: While frequently identified as "hair follicle tests", the test actually assesses the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
