Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Moss Bluff, Louisiana. Whether it's for a drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. For most cases, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head, though body hair is also viable. We can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more popular method for drug screening. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are shifting from urine tests to hair tests. These tests are favored by employers with no drug use tolerance, court orders, and probation requirements. They cover a more extended detection timespan of up to 90 days, with observed sample collection, making them nearly impossible to manipulate. Yet for recent drug use, urine tests remain more precise up to 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term records of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand’s fibers as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, moderately hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial preparation of a sample into the laboratory’s framework. This involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift review for abusive substances. Though Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug presence in most samples, a positive screen needs verification to be court-admissible. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug screening’s complexity.

Verification of any positive screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are rinsed before verification as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: They offer a timeline of drug usage, versus merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days post-consumption to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although called "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why does hair follicle testing excel over urine testing in Moss Bluff, LA? Primarily, the superior detection accuracy of hair tests cannot be overstated. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
