Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Mount Lebanon, Louisiana. If your needs include a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or body is sufficient. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized testing specifications.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in drug testing protocols. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists increasingly favor hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary oversight. The standout advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extended detection window, often reaching up to 90 days, and its observed collection method, making it nearly foolproof. Urine tests remain more precise for screening recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the strand's fibers as it grows. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to around 90 days for alcohol and drug use. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch fragment of close to 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) adjacent to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. Head hair solely refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure in the lab for processing a drug test outcome includes four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a sample into a lab's system. This process also covers verifying the correct sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and supplementing any missing data entry outside an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment to check for drug abuse. While a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug consumption in most samples, a positive result during Screening must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples that initially test positive in Screening necessitate a secondary Confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during the Screening process, more hair is retrieved from the starter specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), showcasing why hair drug screening is a highly complex procedure.

Verification of any positive screening result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing positive undergo a pre-confirmatory wash as required. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to deceive: The precision of hair drug tests is high since they are tough to manipulate.
  • Shows historical patterns: Capable of outlining a pattern of substance use over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become noticeable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically cost more than other testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variability can alter the drug metabolites’ concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests," the assessment is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Mount Lebanon, LA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests by offering a broader detection window and enhanced accuracy. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
