Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Ninock, Louisiana. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, with centers located Nationwide. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is usually required, which can be taken from the head or the body. Hair testing can be customized to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent years for drug testing purposes. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Often used by those with strict drug-free policies, hair tests offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days and are challenging to tamper with. For recent drug use within 5 days, however, urine tests are still the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as a compelling method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair. When harvested near the scalp, it can yield up to approximately a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg, the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG enhancements and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferrable. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be gathered. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, and so on).

Process Overview

The comprehensive procedure in the lab processing of a drug test outcome encompasses Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial acknowledgment of a sample into the lab's system. This phase includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening relates to an early rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screening must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, more hair is retrieved from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are removed from hair at far lower concentrations than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), accounting for the complexity in conducting hair drug screening.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleaned before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory method from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a reduced detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is remarkably hard, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Supplies historical data: It offers insight into drug use patterns over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect current usage: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become tangible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolites concentration in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
