Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Noble, Louisiana. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, and has locations nationwide for conducting these tests. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is typically sufficient. These hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other options.

More recently, drug testing methods increasingly utilize hair follicle tests. Many employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. They're favored by employers adhering to zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probationers. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, which is nearly foolproof, though for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests are still the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a robust approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the emerging hair strand, hair offers an extended-term record of alcohol and other drugs. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can provide a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to alteration, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, sums up to 100mg of hair, representing the perfect specimen for screening and verification. When testing for EtG, add-ons, or above 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. “Head hair” pertains to scalp hair exclusively, while “body hair” includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for determining a drug test outcome consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This phase includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial swift assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for dismissing drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive is required for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging approach.

Confirming any positive Screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage up to 90 days prior, contrasting with the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: The difficulty in adulterating a hair drug test ensures more reliable results.
  • Provides usage history: Hair drug tests can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While colloquially termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
