At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer full-scale hair follicle drug testing services in Parhams, Louisiana. Whether you're in need of a test for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair testing is available nationwide, including numerous testing centers across various cities to facilitate this testing. Generally, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Our hair tests can be tailored for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for detecting drug use. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. The hair follicle test is favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, the courts, and probationers. Its key advantage is an extended detection window, up to 90 days, performed under supervised conditions, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. For current drug use within the past several days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a comprehensive account of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, the hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) from nearest the scalp provides 100mg, a perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. 'Head hair' specifies only scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' includes every other hair type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental steps in lab processing for drug testing: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data not entered via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary analysis for drugs of abuse. Though it is a cost-efficient approach for ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive screening must be verified for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive screenings require further confirmation.

For samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this process, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

The Confirmation phase for positive screening results utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive is cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, heightening result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It delivers a timeline of drug use, rather than just showing recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variance: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Parhams, LA, hair follicle testing stands out due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability compared to urine tests. A critical advantage is its ability to detect drug residues over an extended period, allowing for a more comprehensive assessment of long-term substance use. More so, the method is less susceptible to tampering.

Unlike urine tests, hair testing in Parhams, LA can reveal patterns of use over months, which works particularly well for employers and organizations with stringent drug use policies. Hair testing's precision makes it a preferred choice for informed decisions when it comes to staff recruitment and occupational management.

Extended Detection Window

With hair follicle testing in Parhams, LA, there is a markedly extended detection period for substance use, spanning up to 90 days. This allows employers and individuals to glean a thorough overview of one’s substance history, providing a valuable insight that traditional methods may lack.

The long detection window helps facilitate informed decisions, as it uncovers usage patterns that shorter-term tests might miss. Hair testing is a strategic choice for gaining in-depth knowledge about an individual's potential drug use, offering a broader timeframe for detection.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Parhams, LA, hair follicle testing significantly reduces the likelihood of sample tampering. With its collection and examination process under observation, each test delivers reliable results, making it almost impossible to alter or compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
