Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Percle, Louisiana. Those in need of drug or alcohol analysis through hair methods can rely on our expertise, as we operate centers nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is typically required. Our hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair analysis alternatives.

Recently, drug testing practices have increasingly embraced hair follicle methods. Many employers, legal systems, and substance misuse experts now prefer them over traditional urine tests. These tests cater to employers with strict no-drug policies, legal frameworks, and probationary requirements. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, with an observed collection method that resists tampering, though urine remains best for recent (within 5 days) usage detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. By capturing biomarkers in the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers a comprehensive long-term history of alcohol and drug use. When it is collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window for alcohol and drugs extending up to three months. Hair collection is easy, hard to tamper with, and uncomplicated for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands, similar in size to a #2 pencil, gathered close to the scalp, will supply 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG additions or tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used for collection. When discussing head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Process

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the sample's initial processing within a lab’s system. This step involves verifying appropriate sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a randomly generated LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and supplementing any data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial swift check for drug abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a screen indicating a positive result requires confirmation for it to be considered legally valid. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If during the Screening phase a sample shows a presumptively positive result, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, any samples testing presumptive positive are washed if needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and maintains accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of Hair Drug Testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests are capable of detecting drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It provides a timeline of drug usage over a period, beyond just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can impact the concentration of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
