Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Point, Louisiana. For those needing a test, our centers nationwide, including hair and alcohol/ETG testing, are at your service. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. We offer customizable hair test options for detecting drugs and alcohol alike.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists favor it over standard urine tests for its extended detection capabilities. It's the choice for zero-tolerance employers and probation cases due to its 90-day detection window, observed sample collection, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain more reliable for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-standing record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. If collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. It's straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional panels above 10, or specific requests, a sample of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is integrated into the laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Cost-effective Screening can eliminate drug usage for most samples, but any positive results must be corroborated for legal admissibility. Samples that indicate presumptive positives in Screening need secondary confirmation.

In cases where Screening suggests a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests one of the more challenging methodologies.

Positive results from Screening are substantiated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples showing potential positive results are washed if required before confirmation. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are hard to evade, resulting in more dependable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
