Accredited Drug Testing provides efficient hair follicle drug tests in Port Vincent, Louisiana. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty in hair tests allows us to offer services across all cities Nationwide, including Port Vincent. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

In recent years, conducting drug tests has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and those on probation favor these tests. Their advantage is an extended detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected under observation, making them nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting very recent drug use, within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method to identify alcohol and drug consumption. Hair can offer a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair allows for a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is complex, and shipping is convenient.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (akin to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can provide 100mg of hair, considered ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding ten panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for measurement is suggested. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. In reference to head hair, it denotes only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab procedure for processing drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is logged into a laboratory's database. This phase ensures that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any extra data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial general check for substances of abuse. While Screening is an affordable approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result needs affirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening need follow-up confirmation.

If Screening suggests positivity, more hair is taken from the main specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lesser concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening output is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined following both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection duration: Hair drug tests can discover drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Gives historical information: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: There is a 5-7 day period before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolites' concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly labeled "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Port Vincent, LA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests with its superior detection capabilities. Unlike traditional urine testing, hair tests offer an extended window, capturing drug use history months prior. This makes them ideal for employers seeking comprehensive insights. The accuracy and reliability of hair tests ensure a true representation of an individual's substance use.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing in Port Vincent, LA, is its extended detection window. Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days back, offering an in-depth view of an individual's substance history. For employers, this means a clear understanding of an applicant or employee's long-term habits, supporting informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Port Vincent, LA, represents a breakthrough in tampering resistance. Compared to other testing methods, hair samples are far less susceptible to adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
