Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Roanoke, Louisiana. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, we maintain testing facilities across all cities Nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our hair tests allow analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more personalized testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often favor hair tests over urine analysis. Hair follicle testing is valued by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation programs for its vast detection span, lasting up to 90 days with observed collection, making cheating nearly impossible. For identifying recent 5-day drug use, urine tests remain unparalleled in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an influential method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. The hair's fibers capture biomarkers as the hair grows, creating a prolonged record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month potential detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) nearest the scalp will weigh 100mg, which is the optimal amount for assessing and confirming. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If head hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we refer to scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's system. This process validates that the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial quick assessment for drugs. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Any samples that appear positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potentially positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have the capability to identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which present a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It's exceedingly difficult to alter a hair drug test, rendering the findings more reliable.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers insights into a person's drug use pattern over time, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: A timeframe of roughly 5-7 days is needed for drugs to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Hair color and unique individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
