Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Robert, Louisiana. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and has facilities in cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient for analysis. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests have become a standard in drug testing, required by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts instead of conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests support employers' zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, and probationary conditions. The primary advantage is its extended detection duration of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making it nearly impossible to falsify. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance involvement by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers. When directly gathered from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period reaching roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to adulterate, and simple to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test incorporates four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory's system, ensuring the sample is properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial prompt inspection for signs of drug abuse. Screening presents a cost-effective means to exclude substance use in most samples, yet a positive screen requires verification to be acceptable in judicial proceedings. Examples exhibiting a presumptive positive in Screening must have secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen to prepare for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can verify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter duration.
  • Difficulty to falsify: It is exceedingly hard to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It offers an outline of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to trace recent usage: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences might alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
