Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Saint Clair, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing stands out. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have facilities spread across all U.S. cities ready to assist you. Most tests require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from an individual's head or body. These tests accurately detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored for specific needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular for analysis in recent times. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts often prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Employers under zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and those on probation benefit from its effectiveness. A major advantage is a 90-day detection period, carried out under observation, making it difficult to tamper with. Although for recent drug usage within 5 days, urine tests remain prevalently accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a chronic summary of alcohol and other substance use through biomarker retention in its expanding fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can display a detection timeframe of nearly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipment.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Our reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results is comprised of four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample is sealed and transported accordingly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial, rapid assessment for substances of abuse. This economically efficient method can exclude drug usage in most samples; however, positive screenings necessitate confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentative positive in the Screening phase, supplementary hair is drawn from the original batch and set for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to alternative methods (such as urine or saliva), rendering hair drug screenings the most challenging methodologically.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are cleaned pre-confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) designation for Hair and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests are capable of detecting drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which offer a shorter duration.
  • Challenge to deceive: It's notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers chronological insight: It can illustrate a period of drug use tendencies, beyond just recent use occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after a period of approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
