Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Saint Gabriel, Louisiana. For those needing a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair-based testing, with facilities available nationwide, including every city, capable of conducting these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere on the body is required for analysis, enabling drug or alcohol/ETG testing and other personalized assessments.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle drug testing has increased. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair over urine tests. Companies with stringent anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers often choose this method. Its main advantage is the extended detection span of up to 90 days, with collection closely monitored, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for recent consumption within 5 days, urine tests remain the definitive choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and other drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly three-month window for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment encompassing around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair categories (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The core procedures involved in the lab processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming that the sample was intact and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid test for abused drugs. Although Screening provides a cost-effective method to dismiss drug usage for most samples, any positive result must be confirmed to be legally valid. Any samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical usage insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are generally costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
