In Scotlandville, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we boast testing centers in cities all across the Nation. To perform a test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair typically suffices. Our hair tests can probe for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Nowadays, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug testing. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts insist on them over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests benefit those with zero-tolerance drug policies, probationary measures, and court requirements as they offer a long detection period—up to 90 days—and are nearly resistant to escape methods. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the go-to.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as an efficacious means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a protracted timeline of alcohol and drug intake by encasing biomarkers within the shaft of the developing hair. When taken from the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A snippet measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 hairs (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be utilized. "Head hair" denotes exclusively scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other varieties such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test culminates in four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing into a lab’s system, which entails verifying correct sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional entries missing from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While screening effectively rules out drug consumption for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples that presumptively test positive in Screening require further validation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a notably lower concentration than other techniques, such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening a challenging procedure.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive screening outcome employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation where applicable. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the reviews of both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests with shorter detection timelines.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological data: Demonstrates a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
