Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Shell Beach, Louisiana. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing through a hair sample, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist, with locations in cities across the nation that offer hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are necessary, either from the head or body, to perform the test. Hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for conducting drug tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officials rely on hair follicle testing due to its extended detection period—up to 90 days—collected with direct supervision, making it difficult to manipulate results. Yet, for recent drug use, a urine test remains most accurate within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of drug and alcohol usage by embedding markers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage over an approximate 3-month period. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair segment of 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or exams exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the specimen. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be attained, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair only, while body hair pertains to any other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where the sample enters the laboratory's system, ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a swift initial assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug usage in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation for legal validity. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptively positive result in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most demanding methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results obtained in Screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, rather than indicating only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites detected in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand that is analyzed, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing in Shell Beach, LA, offers superior advantages. The extended detection window makes it highly effective for identifying long-term drug use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
