Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Standard, Louisiana. When you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, their expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with nationwide centers ready to conduct these tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from either the head or body for testing. Hair analysis targets drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

Recently, there's been a noticeable increase in the adoption of hair follicle drug testing. Various entities such as employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probation services. These tests' standout advantage is their extensive detection window, lasting up to 90 days, with direct observation during collection, making tampering almost impossible. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, the urine test remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is acknowledged as a robust method for detecting substance use of drugs and alcohol. Hair can offer a prolonged history of alcohol and drug consumption by encapsulating biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a roughly 3-month detection frame for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample with approximately 200 strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred amount for screening and validation. For EtG, add-on tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the hair sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not an option, a proportional quantity of body hair may be used. In discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, and others).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the sample's preliminary handling into a lab’s system, including confirming that it was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data documentation not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial swift evaluation for drugs of misuse. While this stage is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result here must be confirmed for it to stand in legal settings. Any samples registering as presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary verification.

If a sample tests as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are retrieved from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine, saliva), rendering hair drug analysis the most intricate method to conduct.

Confirmation of any screening positives occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation if necessary. The full process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing spots drug use extending to 90 days, versus urine tests that possess a more restricted detection duration.
  • Challenging to deceive: It's exceptionally challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insight: It showcases a drug use trend over time, unlike recent-only usage indicators.

Limitations:

  • Unable to indicate recent use: Drugs generally require about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug testing is usually pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth rates might alter the drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the assessment evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
