Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Starks, Louisiana. If a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair examinations, with testing sites available nationwide in all cities to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other hair testing requirements.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with stringent no-drug policies, the legal system, and individuals on parole. The key advantage of this test is its extended drug use detection window, which can last up to 90 days, using an overseen collection process that is almost infallible. Meanwhile, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests maintain their accuracy edge.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand’s growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can offer roughly a 3-month detection range for substances such as alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is optimal for initial screening and subsequent validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it’s advisable to gather 150mg of hair. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a comparable amount of body hair could be utilized. When we mention head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a laboratory drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory framework. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any missing data not incorporated via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary, rapid assessment for substance misuse. Though Screening is economical for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates additional verification to be defensible in legal settings. Samples yielding presumably positive results during Screening must undergo confirmatory testing.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves withdrawing drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), hence why hair drug testing is considered challenging.

Confirming any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The processing from Accessioning through to Confirmation is examined in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair procedure and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: It's extremely arduous to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more precise findings.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than merely current usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
